What is the problem with Baycol?

Baycol is a popular synthetic drug in a class called statins marketed starting in the late 90s to compete with the popular drug Lipitor. It was used to lower cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease. Over 50 deaths were reported in patients using Baycol due to side effects such and Rhabdomyolysis and renal failure. In 2001, Bayer voluntarily withdrew Baycol from the market due to its severe, life-threatening side effects. Since the withdrawal, Baycol has been linked to over 100 deaths due to Rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure, and renal failure. Another 385 nonfatal cases of rhabdomyolysis have been reported.

Rhabdomyolysis is a rapid break down of skeletal muscle tissue. This breakdown causes a release of toxins into the blood stream which then in turn leads to acute renal failure.
