The pumps have been predominately used amongst adults, but have become more popular in recent years with the adolescent population. From January 1, 1996- December 31, 2005, the FDA has received over 1,500 adverse event reports, including 13 deaths, among adolescent users from the use of these insulin pumps.
More and more teenagers are turning towards insulin pumps to make their lives more flexible and normal. They allow the teenagers to inject insulin discreetly in public. The FDA has called for more studies to address safety concerns in teens and even younger children who use the insulin pumps. A total of 102 insulin-pump reports highlighted factors that may have contributed to the adverse event, including problems associated with compliance, education, sports-related activities, and dropping or damaging the pump. Adolescents need to be made aware of proper usage and risks associated with improper usage.
