What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), also known as spastic colon, is a complex disorder of the lower intestinal tract which is characterized by a pattern of symptoms that is often worsened by emotional stress. The muscles in the intestines or the nerves that control the intestines do not working properly, causing the intestines to function abnormally. Because of the name, IBS can be confused with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is associated with a change in bowel pattern, such as loose or more frequent bowel movements, diarrhea, and/or constipation. Irritable bowel syndrome may be a life-long chronic condition, but symptoms can often be improved or relieved through treatment.

Zelnorm is a common drug used for patients with IBS. Unfortunately, on March 30, 2007, the drug was recalled in the United States due to its serious side effects including heart attacks, strokes, and ischemic colitis.
