Levaquin is a popular antibiotic prescribed to patients to treat bacterial infections of the abdomen, skin, bones, urinary tract, and lower respiratory system. Fluroquinolones are thought to be toxic and decrease blood supply to tendon fibers. The Public Citizen recently petitioned for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to add a “black box warning” to Levaquin and other drugs in its class. Almost 1 in 250 patients suffer tendon ruptures after taking Levaquin. Approximately 262 cases of tendon ruptures, 259 cases of tendonitis, and 274 cases of other tendon disorders have been reported to the FDA, with 61% of those being caused by Levaquin.
The Achilles tendon is the most common rupture associated with these antibiotics. However, they have also been linked to ruptures in the rotator cuff (shoulder), the biceps, the hand, and the thumb. Symptoms associated with tendon ruptures are difficulty walking, swelling and bruising, and sudden and severe pain.
