What is Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome?

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a life-threatening, neurological disorder most often caused by an adverse reaction to neuroleptic or antipsychotic drugs. It is an extremely serious syndrome that usually creates a neurological emergency. In most cases, the disorder develops within the first 2 weeks of treatment with the drug; however, the disorder may develop any time during the therapy period.

Signs & Symptoms of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome

The following is a list of signs and symptoms related to Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome. Unfortunately, symptoms are sometimes misinterpreted by doctors as symptoms of mental illness, delaying treatment.

  • Muscular rigidity
  • Sweating
  • High fever
  • Instability of the autonomic nervous system
  • Unstable blood pressure
  • Changes in cognition
  • Agitation
  • Delirium
  • Coma

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Treatment Options

Immediate intensive care is usually required for those who have developed NMS. The first step is to discontinue the neuroleptic or antipsychotic drug and to treat the fever aggressively. A muscle relaxant may be prescribed. Dopaminergic drugs, such as a dopamine agonist, have been reported to be useful.
