What is the problem with NuvaRing?

The NuvaRing contraceptive device, a flexible plastic ring, is an alternative form of birth control designed to release a continuous low dose of a progestin and an estrogen to the bloodstream. Due to the incorrect delivery of estrogen, life-threatening side effects are likely. Physicians warn that an improper amount or improper delivery of estrogen can cause blood clotting issues in many women. Currently, the NuvaRing's Physician label contains warnings of blood clots and venous thrombosis. However, there is not currently a "black box" warning on the device.

Recently, a wife and mother of two, located in New Jersey, died of a blood clot believed to be caused by the NuvaRing. The widower of the woman has recently filed a claim against the maker, claiming the device caused the deadly blood clot.
