What is the problem with Ortho Evra?

Ortho Evra, a popular contraceptive method among more than 4 million women, was first marketed and sold in 2002. The FDA has now released a health warning stating that women using Ortho Evra are at a higher risk of developing deadly blood clots. Ortho Evra users are being exposed to 60 percent more of the hormone estrogen than those who are using the pill. In April 2005, a young fashion student collapsed in a subway station in New York City. An autopsy report found a blood clot in the student’s lung and the medical examiner determined the clot to be a result of Ortho Evra. In a recent survey, the Associated Press found that 17 relatively healthy women between the ages of 17 and 30 died from blood clots believed to be related to the Ortho Evra patch.
