AM2 PAT Heparin syringes have been found to be contaminated with Serratia marcescens, which have resulted in patient infections.
Pre-Filled Heparin Lock Flush Solution USP syringes used to flush intravenous and catheter lines to prevent clotting have been recalled due to the recent outbreak of blood infections associated with their use. The pre-filled syringes could be contaminated with bacteria known as Serratia marcescens.
Serratia marcescens is a human pathogen, which means that it is known to cause disease in humans. Serratia marcescens is a naturally occurring bacterium that can develop in a number of common places, including: soil, water, sinks, bathtubs, and on some foods (primarily starchy foods). It has been linked to pneumonia, blood infections, urinary tract, and wound infections.
