What is the problem with Stove Tipping?

Stove and kitchen range tip-overs, when weight is placed on the oven door, have been a continual problem for decades. It was first brought to the public’s attention when a young girl lost a limb in 1986. Since 1988, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has reported 33 deaths and 84 injuries related to stove tipping. The problem can be prevented with an inexpensive, L-shaped bracket mounted on the back of the range. This simple solution, though, has only been required since 1991. Unfortunately, most units installed after 1991 still don’t have these L-shaped brackets to secure the range and stove to the wall.

Stove Tip-Over Injuries and Deaths

A mother in Texas was cooking chicken on a Sears stove. When her toddler pulled down the oven door and stood on it, the stove tipped over, sending a pot of boiling water and chicken flying into the air and down on the toddler. That was 12 years ago, but Moran said her son still faces surgery to reduce prominent scars.

A Los Angeles woman received $20 million from Frigidaire Home Products and a local retailer after her range tipped over and scalded her son and two nephews with a simmering pot of stew. The children suffered third-degree burns over half their bodies.
In New York, a 3-year-old tipped over a stove when trying to reach for some cookies. The stove crushed his 18-month-old brother who was standing by.

In Florida, an 18-month-old girl was crushed by a stove that tipped over.
