Tussionex, which was approved in 1987, is a prescription cough medication which contains hydrocodone, which is a narcotic used as a pain reliever. UCB Inc. has recently contacted the FDA proposing a stronger warning for the medicine following the reports of the deaths. “There is a real and serious risk for overdosing if this medication is not used according to the labeling,” said Curtis Rosebraugh, M.D., M.P.H., acting director of the FDA's Office of Drug Evaluation II. An overdose of hydrocodone can lead to serious, adverse side effects. The Tussionex label says specifically that the drug is not intended for use in children under 6, but the reports of pediatric deaths have made UCB Inc. come to a decision to add clearer information about the risks of prescribing the medication at high doses or to young children. No one under the age of 6 should be prescribed Tussionex, and Tussionex should not be prescribed at an interval less than 12 hours.
