What is the problem with Aqua Dots?

Aqua Dots is a popular Chinese-made toy that consists of a craft kit which allows children to create various multi-dimensional designs using small colored beads. The beads fuse together when sprayed with water. Scientist recently found that the coating on the beads that causes the beads to stick to each other when water is added contains a chemical that can turn toxic when many are ingested. The human body metabolizes this chemical into the so-called “date rape” drug gamma hydroxy butyrate or GHB. If ingested, the GHB can cause unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, respiratory distress, coma, and even potential of death. Two children in the United States have been hospitalized due to the adverse reaction to Aqua Dots.
