Cialis Lawsuit

tsf-no-longer-accepting-cases

A growing number of lawsuits have been filed by men who took Cialis and developed melanoma, an aggressive and often deadly type of skin cancer. Eli Lilly & Co. is accused of failing to warn about the risk.

Overview

Cialis (tadalafil) is a prescription drug for erectile dysfunction. It is made by Eli Lilly & Co. and was approved by the FDA in 2003.

Erectile Dysfunction Drugs and Skin Cancer

Cialis and Viagra work by inhibiting the enzyme PDE5. The problem is that recent studies have found that melanomas become more invasive when PDE5 is inhibited. About 50% of melanomas have mutations that inhibit PDE5 and make the cancer more aggressive.

FDA Investigating Melanoma Risk

In June 2016, the FDA announced that it was deciding whether to issue warnings about the risk of melanoma from erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. Click here to read more.

Cialis Melanoma Skin Cancer Lawsuits

Eli Lilly & Co. is facing dozens of lawsuits from men who developed skin cancer after taking Cialis. One of the first lawsuits was filed in October 2014 by Jerry Ryan, a man from Oklahoma who was diagnosed with melanoma in September 2012 — Case No. CIV-14-1045-HE.

In August 2016, one law firm in Alabama filed 7 Cialis skin cancer lawsuits. They accuse Eli Lilly of selling a dangerous drug and failing to warn about the “significant risk of exacerbating melanoma.” Click here to read more.

Study Finds 84% Increased Risk of Melanoma

In 2014, Harvard researchers published a study linking erectile dysfunction drugs with an 84% increased risk of melanoma in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

The conclusions of the study were based on data from roughly 30,000 men. The study began in 2000, before Cialis was approved. Around 8.6 of every 1,000 men on Viagra developed melanoma, vs. 4.3 of every 1,000 men who did not take Viagra.

Cialis Lawsuits Centralized in MDL

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against Eli Lilly by men who developed melanoma after taking Cialis. These lawsuits are not part of a class action. Instead, they are individual lawsuits that have been centralized into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2691) in the Northern District of California under U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg. The same MDL involves hundreds of Viagra melanoma lawsuits against Pfizer.

What is Melanoma?

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. It occurs in cells that make a skin color pigment called melanin.

What is the Risk?

The American Cancer Society estimates that 76,000 new cases of melanoma will occur in the United States in 2016 — about 50% in men — and 10,000 will die from the disease.

Symptoms of Melanoma

A normal mole is a benign (non-cancerous) growth that starts in these same cells. Melanoma may resemble a mole or start in a mole. If you find a mole with the following symptoms, make an appointment with a doctor immediately:

  • Asymmetrical shape
  • Uneven edges
  • Variety of colors (tan, black, red, white, blue)
  • Larger than a pencil eraser (1/4-inch in diameter)
  • Changes over time
  • Bleeding, itching, or crusting
