If you decide to file a lawsuit against the manufacturers of the product that caused your disease, you may be entitled to significant financial compensation for your medical expenses, lost income, decreased quality of life, permanent disability, and more. Argyria Overview

Argyria (pronounced ahr-JIR-e-uh) is a permanent skin condition that is sometimes referred to as the “disease of the living dead,” because people with this condition have a permanent gray-blue color to their skin caused by microscopic particles of silver embedded in their skin cells. Because silver is oxidized by sunlight, people who wish to prevent their argyria from getting worse must stay out of the sun. This can significantly decrease their quality of life.

Argyria often occurs after a person ingests dietary supplements containing silver salt (usually colloidal silver). These dietary supplements are sold to treat illnesses such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, herpetic infections, and more. There is no scientific evidence linking colloidal silver to any health benefits, and it may actually cause severe side effects.

Argyria is a serious cosmetic concern. People who suffer from argyria have a blue-gray discoloration of their skin, eyes, internal organs, gums, and nails. This skin discoloration is permanent, and it does not go away when a person stops exposure to silver products.

What is Colloidal Silver?

Colloidal silver is a liquid suspension of microscopic silver particles. It is an ingredient in many dietary supplements, health foods, and vitamin products, mostly sold over the internet. Colloidal silver is not considered a safe or effective treatment for any health condition. Silver does not have any purpose in the body, and it is not an essential mineral. In fact, tiny silver particles build up in the body over time, and they are not excreted. This can cause silver toxicity, or a permanent skin disfigurement called argyria.

Dietary supplements containing colloidal silver are typically intended for oral ingestion, nasal drips, injection, or for application on the skin. In large doses, colloidal silver can cause irreversible side effects, including kidney damage, seizures, and neurological disorders.

Colloidal Silver and the FDA

The United States government regulates dietary supplements through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The laws for dietary supplements are far less strict than those for drugs. In fact, dietary supplements can be sold in the U.S. without gaining FDA approval, and without providing any data regarding their safety or effectiveness. Even so, the FDA has taken action against colloidal supplement products. In 1999, the FDA issued a ruling that no products containing colloidal silver are considered safe or effective. The FDA and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have also joined forces to issue warnings to people running online websites that sell colloidal silver products with unsubstantiated health claims.

The FDA has banned the manufacturers of dietary supplements from claiming their product can treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. However, many dietary supplement manufacturers flaunt the FDA and claim colloidal silver is a cure-all for dozens of common ailments. The problem is that people may be misled into choosing colloidal silver instead of visiting a doctor or using a proven medical treatment. The FDA has issued many warning letters to dietary supplement manufacturers who make health claims, but the problem persists.

Colloidal Silver and Antibiotics

Colloidal silver is often marketed as an alternative to antibiotics. Many promoters of colloidal silver claim that small amounts of silver can kill microorganisms. There has been very little research regarding the safety or effectiveness of using colloidal silver as an alternative to antibiotics. Although there is evidence that colloidal silver can kill bacteria in a dish in a few minutes, it is unknown what effect this might have on healthy cells in the body.
