January 20, 2015 — Inventure Foods, Inc., of Phoenix, Arizona, has recalled frozen smoothie mixes that were sold at Costco and Walmart under the Rader Farms Fresh Start brand due to potential Listeria contamination.
No cases of food poisoning have been reported and Listeria was not detected on any products that were actually shipped to stores.
The “precautionary” recall was issued because Listeria was found on spinach and/or kale ingredients that were used in the smoothie mix and supplied by another company.
Products included in the recall:
- Fresh Start Smoothie Blend: Sold in 3-lb bags at Costco.
- Fresh Start Sunrise Refresh Fusion: Sold in 35 oz. packages at Walmart.
- Fresh Start Daily Power Fusion: Sold in 35 oz. packages at Walmart.
Both Costco and Walmart products were sold in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. The Walmart products were also shipped to Wyoming or Texas. The Costco products were also shipped to Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
Listeria monocytogenes is a common bacteria that is found in soil, dust, and water. Infection can take up to 70 days and it may be life-threatening in young children, older adults, and people with frail immune systems.
