Defective Instant Noodle Soup Cups Tip Over, Burn & Injure Children

In recent years, a growing number of instant noodle soup manufacturers have launched new products in trays and bowls as opposed to styrofoam cups. One major advantage is that the bowl-shaped design is significantly less likely to tip over and spill boiling-hot liquid and noodles. Our lawyers are now evaluating cup noodle burn injury lawsuits on behalf of individuals — especially children — who were injured by defective cup noodle products.

Tipping Hazard with Cup Noodles vs. Bowl Noodles

The tipping hazard of cup noodles vs. bowl noodles was identified in 2006. The Journal of Burn Care & Research published a study proving that cup designs could tip at less than a 20º angle, where bowl noodles tipped at a near-vertical angle. They warned: “Simple redesigning of instant soup packaging with a wider base and shorter height… would reduce the frequency of soup burns.”

Although it has been several years since this study was published, manufacturers have continued to sell hazardous products with inadequate warnings about the risk — especially for children.

Child Burn Injury from Instant Noodle Soup

Every year, over 500,000 children suffer scalding burn injuries. Thousands are injured by hot soup, and emergency room doctors have reported receiving multiple cases per week involving instant cups of noodle soup.

According to a study published in 2007, “Noodle soup causes a significantly longer hospital stay than other types of soup.” This is because noodle stick to a child’s skin and stay hotter longer than watery soup.

Symptoms of a soup burn in children:

  • First-degree burn: Causes mild or moderate pain, and skin appears red and swollen.
  • Second-degree burn: Causes severe pain, blisters (fluid-filled), and skin appears bright-red and swollen.
  • Third-degree burn: Causes no pain because nerves are destroyed. Skin appears white, dry, waxy, or leathery.
