Depacon can cause serious birth defects if taken during pregnancy. On December 3, 2009, the FDA notified health care professionals and patients about an increased risk of neural tube defects and other major birth defects, such as craniofacial defects, cardiovascular malformations, limb and skeletal defects, and cognitive defects associated with Depacon. Depacon is also known as valproate sodium and is manufactured by Abbot Laboratories. The drug was originally indicted for seizures, but use of the drug has expanded to include treatment of various other conditions such as migraines and depressive disorders. The medication affects the fetus during the first trimester. Medications that cause birth defects in the first trimester are especially concerning since many women may not know they are pregnant yet.
