Florida Gulf Coast Oil Spill Information

The Gulf Coast of Florida is known for its beautiful white beaches and sports fishing. However, the BP and Transocean oilrig that continues to spill oil into the Gulf may change all of that. Depending on the amount of oil that spills and the currents, the oil could wash up all along Florida’s beaches. In addition, parts of Florida’s coast have already been closed to recreational and commercial fishing. No one can tell just how big an impact this spill will have on the residents and businesses in Florida, but it is potentially catastrophic. Even David Kennedy of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said, “I am frightened. This is a very, very big thing.”

Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen said that in the worst-case scenario, the well could spill 4.2 million gallons of oil a day into the Gulf of Mexico. More than a week after the oil began leaking, U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said “ultimate relief’ from the oil spill was 90 days away.”

All of the people and businesses along the Gulf Coast are at risk. The owners of beach houses, condominiums, hotels, motels, and campgrounds are looking at a potentially huge loss of business for months if not years. The restaurants, souvenir shops, outlet mall, retail stores, miniature golf courses, amusements parks, beach equipment rental stores and more are also facing the same fate, as are the fisherman, boat owners, charter boat companies, guides and all those associated with the commercial and recreational fishing industries in Florida.
