Janumet Pancreatitis Treatment

Janumet Pancreatitis Treatment

People who require treatment for Janumet pancreatitis will usually need to be hospitalized. Janumet pancreatitis treatments typically include blood tests, pain medications, intravenous (IV) fluids, nutritional management, and more. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove infected tissues in the pancreas. These treatments are usually successful, but they can be very expensive and debilitating. If you decide to file a Janumet lawsuit, our lawyers may be able to help you recover financial compensation for your medical expenses, and more.

What is the problem with Janumet?

In 2007, Merck & Co. began selling Janumet in the United States. Janumet is the only anti-diabetes drug to combine the standard anti-diabetes drug metformin with a new type of diabetes drug called sitagliptin. Unfortunately, sitagliptin has been linked to a doubled risk of acute pancreatitis, according to a study published in February 2013 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Furthermore, in 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Drug Safety Communication because they received 88 reports of acute pancreatitis in sitagliptin patients. In 2012, the FDA also sent Merck a Warning Letter for waiting several years to conduct a 3-month study of pancreatitis in rodents treated with sitagliptin.

Janumet Pancreatitis Treatment

Our Janumet lawyers are concerned that many people have suffered extreme pain and suffering, incurred medical expenses, and may have permanent injuries as a result of pancreatitis that may have been caused by Janumet. Fortunately, most Janumet pancreatitis treatments are successful — Janumet has not been linked to any deaths from pancreatitis.

Janumet pancreatitis treatments may include:

  • Intravenous (IV) fluid repletion: This may be necessary to replenish fluids that are lost due to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and an inability to eat food during treatment.
  • Blood tests to monitor chemical / nutrient balances
  • Pain medications
  • Nutritional management: This is an important aspect of Janumet pancreatitis treatment that is still under debate. Fasting (not eating or drinking anything) is the traditional way to give the pancreas a chance to rest and recover. However, more research is needed to determine the best way to manage nutrition in pancreatitis patients.
  • Preventing infection: Infection of damaged or necrotic (dead) pancreatitis is the biggest risk, because once infection sets in, 10-15% of people will die. Therefore, most patients are treated with prophylactic antibiotics.
  • Surgery: This is typically only an option if the pancreatitis is not controlled for at least two weeks and necrotic tissues have become infected. It may also be necessary to drain a pseudocyst or abscess that may be filled with liquefied tissue, pus, digestive enzymes, and/or blood.
