Jeni’s Stops Making Ice Cream After Finding Listeria Again

June 15, 2015 — Just weeks after reopening, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams has temporarily closed their doors again after finding Listeria in a production facility in Columbus, Ohio.

Jeni’s CEO John Lowe issued a statement to report that Listeria was found during “routine swabbing” as part of a monitoring program implemented after the company recalled all of its products in April.

Listeria was traced to the spout of a pint-filling machine after the original recall. The company does not know how Listeria got into the facility again or say where it was found, but said, “We have a theory and are testing that theory.” No timeline has been set for resuming operations.

Since May 13, Jeni’s has not sold any ice cream unless the batch tested negative for Listeria. According to Mr. Lowe:

“So it is with complete confidence that I can say all of the ice cream that has been served in our shops since reopening on May 22 has been safe and is 100% Listeria-free. We are closing our scoop shops temporarily because we don’t have enough ice cream to keep them stocked.”

No illnesses have been linked to Jeni’s ice cream yet.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause life-threatening invasive infections, including meningitis and sepsis. It is commonly found in soil, water, and some animals, and can enter an ice cream facility on contaminated ingredients or the bottom of someone’s shoe, for example.
