January 6, 2012 — The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that Dr. Artuto Vargas in may be facing a Montebello sexual abuse lawsuit after a patient accused him of assaulting her during a routine examination at Kaiser Permanente Medical Offices. The woman was being examined in July, when Vargas assaulted her. The was arrested and charged with three felony sex crimes, but he has since been released on $200,00 bail. No other victims of Vargas have come forward yet.

Vargas had been working at Kaiser Permanente Medical Offices, located at 1550 Town Center Drive, Montebello, CA since 2005. He turned himself in to the police on Wednesday, January 4, 2012. He has no prior criminal convictions. So far, only one woman has accused Vargas of assaulting her.

Vargas has been charges with felony charges that include sexual battery, sexual exploitation by a physician, and sexual penetration by a foreign object. He is due in East Los Angeles Superior Court on February 6, 2012 to be arraigned.

The investigation of the incident between Vargas and the woman has been ongoing for six months. Officials at the hospital where he worked said that they were quick to acknowledge the allegations and take action. They confronted him regarding the accusations, required that he conduct examinations in the presence of a chaperone, and warned him that he could face serious disciplinary action. When the legal investigation began shortly after the woman reported the incident, Vargas was placed on administrative leave. Both Vargas and the hospital officials have cooperated with the ongoing investigation.

Vargas’s attorney, Brian Virag, reported that he had not yet seen the charges against his client.
