June 5, 2014 — Dozens of people have been infected with Salmonella after eating organic sprouted chia seed powder. Health authorities in the United States and Canada are concerned because chia powder has a long shelf-life. Consumers should check if they own recalled products and discard them immediately.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported 17 cases of food poisoning linked to the outbreak. Canadian health officials are investigating 27 cases linked to the outbreak.
At least two people have been hospitalized. The strains have been identified as Salmonella Newport and Salmonella Hartford. Illnesses have been reported from 10 states and four Canadian provinces. The outbreak began in January and has continued through May.
The outbreak was originally traced to chia seed powder sold by Navitas Naturals, a California-based health food company. Those products were recalled last month. On May 30, two health food companies in Canada also recalled products containing chia powder over concern about Salmonella.
