Osteomyelitis Lawsuit

What is Osteomyelitis? Osteomyelitis is a severe bone or bone marrow infection.

Signs & Symptoms of Osteomyelitis

Signs and Symptoms of Osteomyelitis include:

  • Pain in the bone
  • Local swelling, redness, and warmth
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling (malaise)
  • Drainage of pus through the skin (in chronic osteomyelitis)
  • Excessive sweating
  • Chills
  • Low back pain
  • Swelling of the ankles, feet, and legs

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

A physical examination shows bone tenderness and possibly swelling and redness. Tests to diagnose Osteomyelitis may include a bone scan, blood cultures, MRIs, needle aspiration of the area around affected bones, or bone lesion biopsy.

The objective of treatment for osteomyelitis is to eliminate the infection and prevent it from getting worse. It usually requires prolonged antibiotic therapy. Over a course of weeks or months, the antibiotics are given through IV to treat the infection. The purpose of the antibiotics is to eliminate the bacteria causing the infection. At times, the condition may require surgery to remove the dead bone tissue.
