January 5, 2015 — A deadly outbreak of food poisoning linked to pre-packaged, commercially-produced caramel apples has claimed a sixth life, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is warning that it may not be over yet.
At least 32 people have been infected in the United States, with cases reported in Arizona (4), California (2), Minnesota (4), Missouri (5), Nevada (1), New Mexico (6), North Carolina (1), Texas (4), Utah (1), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (3).
In Canada, health officials have reported two cases of listeriosis matching the genetic fingerprint of cases in the United States.
The outbreak may be connected to apples supplied by Bidart Brothers. Three companies have issued recalls, including Happy Apples, California Snack Foods, and Merb’s Candies.
Additional brands of pre-packaged caramel apples may be contaminated. Until more information is known, the CDC recommends against eating commercially-produced caramel apples — including plain apples and those with toppings like nuts, candy, chocolate, or sprinkles.
Families of some victims have already come forward to seek justice. The first lawsuit has been filed against Safeway, Inc., on behalf of an elderly woman who died after eating caramel apples purchased at the grocery store in California.
