Stryker Hip Implant Recall 2013

Stryker Orthopedics has recalled an alarming number of hip implants, including:

  • Stryker Rejuvenate: This “modular-neck” hip implant was recalled in July 2012 due to high rates of metal corrosion and fretting.
  • Stryker ABG II: Another “modular-neck” implant recalled in July 2012. The metal-on-metal “stem and neck” component can release toxic metal particles if it corrodes.
  • Stryker Trident: This ceramic-on-ceramic hip implant was recalled in 2008.

What is the problem with Stryker Hip Implants?

The problem with “metal-on-metal” hip implants is that the metal parts can grind together and shed toxic nano-particles of chromium and cobalt into the hip. Furthermore, cobalt particles are highly soluble, which means they can seep into the bloodstream and cause systemic reactions in other organs (especially the heart).

Stryker Hip Implant Risks and Complications

Our lawyers are handling Stryker hip implant lawsuits on behalf of people who were injured by the following complications of the recalled Stryker hip implants:

  • Corrosion and/or fretting of the hip implant can release toxic particles of chromium and cobalt into a patient’s body.
  • Tissue damage and bone loss can occur around the hip implant due to irritating metal debris.
  • Hip implant may loosen or become very painful, which can severely decrease a patient’s mobility and quality of life.
  • Revision surgery may be necessary to remove the defective hip implant and replace it with a better implant. This surgery may involve re-driving a femoral stem into the patient’s femur, which can be very painful and debilitating.
  • Out-of-pocket expenses for surgery, disability, and lost wages may be extremely high. Many people are now seeking financial compensation for their defective hip implant by filing a lawsuit against Stryker in 2013.
