June 8, 2015 — Pfizer has been hit with a lawsuit from a man who took Viagra for over a decade before being diagnosed with invasive melanoma.

The man is a resident of Tennessee who filed the lawsuit on June 1 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee (Case No. 2:15-CV-00154).

Mr. Eubanks was prescribed Viagra in 2000 for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. He continued to use it regularly until 2013, when he switched to Cialis (tadalafil).

He was diagnosed with melanoma, an aggressive and often deadly type of skin cancer, in November 2013. The cancer rapidly spread from a spot on his back to thyroid and lymph nodes under his left arm.

The lawsuit accuses Pfizer of negligence for failing to adequately warn men about te risk of melanoma, and states:

“Had [Pfizer] properly disclosed the melanoma-related risks associated with Viagra, Robert Eubanks would have avoided the risk of developing melanoma by not using Viagra at all, severely limiting the dosage and length of its use, and more closely monitoring the degree to which the Viagra was adversely affecting his health.”

The complaint cites a study published in June 2014 by the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers looked at data on nearly 26,000 men and found that men on Viagra were 84% more likely to develop invasive melanoma. Men who had ever used Viagra were twice as likely to develop melanoma as men who did not. The study did not prove a causal relationship between Viagra and melanoma and researchers did not recommend a label update.
