Benicar Celiac Disease Lawsuit

Benicar Celiac Disease Lawsuit

Benicar has been linked to sprue-like enteropathy, a gastrointestinal illness that is easily misdiagnosed as Celiac disease. The difference is that a gluten-free diet does not cure symptoms — the only treatment is stopping Benicar. Unfortunately, many people were misdiagnosed for years because doctors were unaware of the link between Benicar and enteropathy.

Benicar and Celiac Disease

Benicar (olmesartan) is an anti-hypertensive drug that was developed by Daiichi Sankyo. In recent years, researchers have published several studies linking Benicar and sprue-like enteropathy, a gastrointestinal disease that mimics symptoms of Celiac disease.

One of the first studies was published by Dr. Joseph Murray, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic who specialized in treating difficult cases of Celiac disease. In a study published in August 2012 by Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Dr. Murray described 22 cases of sprue-like enteropathy that improved when Benicar was discontinued. The FDA published a Drug Safety Communication to warn about this risk in July 2013.

Were You Misdiagnosed with Celiac Disease?

If so, you are not alone. Lawsuits have already been filed by people who allege that Daiichi Sankyo, the manufacturer of Benicar, failed to adequately warn that Benicar can cause sprue-like enteropathy. One man from Texas was misdiagnosed with Celiac disease for years, hospitalized 10 times for over 100 days, and developed permanent intestinal damage.

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is a disease that causes intestinal inflammation in response to eating gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Over time, inflammation damages the lining of the intestines, which interferes with the body’s ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. People with Celiac disease often develop chronic diarrhea or constipation, weight-loss, and malnutrition.

Celiac Disease Symptoms

According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms of Celiac disease may include:

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Weight-loss
  • Constipation
  • Anemia (low iron)
  • Loss of bone density (osteoporosis)
  • Itchy, blistery skin rash
  • Damage to dental enamel
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Numbness, tingling, nervous system disorders
  • Joint pain
