FDA Safety Warning for Benicar Enteropathy
In July 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Drug Safety Communication warning that they had received 23 reports of sprue-like enteropathy in Benicar patients.
Studies linking Benicar and enteropathy:
- Digestive and Liver Disease (January 2014) — Study describing five cases of enteropathy associated with Benicar. All cases occurred in one small gastroenterology unit; researchers warned “this adverse effect may not be rare.”
- Mayo Clinic Proceedings (August 2012) — Mayo Clinic researchers describe 22 cases of enteropathy associated with Benicar. Nearly two-thirds of cases required hospitalization, and most patients also had symptoms of intestinal damage.
What is Enteropathy?
Enteropathy refers to any disease of the intestine. Most cases involve inflammation of the intestines (enteritis), and it it involves the stomach, it is known as gastroenteritis. Benicar is associated with sprue-like enteropathy, which is very similar to gluten-sensitive enteropathy (Celiac disease).
Intestinal Villous Atrophy
One of the most serious complications of Benicar is intestinal villous atrophy, which is a type of permanent intestinal damage. Normally, the intestine is lined with villi, which a microscopic finger-like tentacles that line the intestines and help absorb food and nutrients. Over time, enteropathy destroys the villi, resulting in a “flattening” or atrophy of the intestinal lining. It can also cause severe inflammation of the mucous lining of the intestines.
Signs & Symptoms
Benicar is associated with enteropathy that can occur months or even years after the medication is initiated. Symptoms include:
- Colon swelling and inflammation (colitis)
- Intestinal damage
- Intestinal villous atrophy
- And more
Diagnosis of sprue-like enteropathy can be complicated, because symptoms mimic Celiac disease (gluten intolerance). Therefore, patients on Benicar with severe diarrhea should be placed on a gluten-free diet and given a blood test to check for tissue transglutaminase antibodies. Even if the patient has been on Benicar for years, it can potentially causes enteropathy.
