August 28, 2013 — Taylor Farms de Mexico is not responsible for an outbreak of Cyclospora food poisoning in Texas, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Taylor Farms, an American company that processes salad in Mexico, imported a pre-packaged salad mix that was eaten by 80% of people who got sick in Iowa and Nebraska.
CDC cautioned that it is not unusual for different foods to cause outbreaks of food poisoning in the same season. For example, in a several-month period in 1997, three outbreaks of cyclosporiasis were linked to different fresh produce items.
The CDC stated:
“The preliminary analysis of results from an investigation into a cluster of cases that ate at a Texas restaurant does not show a connection to Taylor Farms de Mexico. … Although the investigation of cases continues, available evidence suggests that not all of the cases of cyclosporiasis in the various states are directly related to each other.”
Health officials in Texas interviewed people who were diagnosed with Cyclospora to see what they ate and where they ate in the last 2 weeks before getting sick. Investigators pinpointed a cluster of illnesses from people who ate at one restaurant in Texas, which was not named. Other people who ate at the restaurant but did not get sick were also interviewed. The investigation found no connection between the illnesses and salad imported by Taylor Farms.
Unfortunately, researchers do not have the ability to differentiate between strains of Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite. Such tools would be useful for linking illnesses together and testing products for the parasite.
