UPDATE: Cali White Charcoal Toothpaste Class Action

In January 2020, a class action lawsuit was filed by a woman who claims that Cali White Activated Charcoal Toothpaste can damage teeth. The toothpaste manufacturer, Crew International LLC, is accused of misleading consumers into buying their charcoal toothpaste by claiming that it is “detoxifying” and “safe” for whitening.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California — In re: Hartanovich v. Crew International LLCCase No. 4:19-cv-00708-JED-FHM.

What is the Problem?

Black toothpaste is advertised to absorb toxins and remove surface stains on the teeth. The problem is that charcoal can also remove enamel, leaving the surface of the teeth rougher and more prone to permanent stains, yellowing, cavities, gum disease, and more.

Dentist Warning About Dangers of Black Toothpaste

What is Charcoal Toothpaste?

Charcoal toothpaste (also called “black toothpaste”) is made from activated charcoal. It is advertised as an all-natural way to whiten teeth. Unfortunately, charcoal is also extremely abrasive. Brushing your teeth with gritty particles of charcoal can scrape off the tooth enamel. Once the tooth enamel is gone, it never comes back.

Does Black Toothpaste Really Whiten Teeth?

Long-term use of black toothpaste can result in permanently stained or discolored teeth. Charcoal is also absorbed into the gums, fillings, and tonsils, which can lead to a wide range of oral health problems.

Side Effects of Charcoal Toothpaste

  • Cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth enamel damage
  • Receding gum lines
  • Yellowing teeth
  • Dark stains on teeth
  • Increased sensitivity to cold or heat
  • And more
