July 23, 2014 — The use of hGH reported by teenagers has doubled between 2012 and 2013, according to a survey by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. What is Human Growth Hormone?

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is important for normal growth and development during childhood and adolescence. For adults, it helps maintain healthy body composition and regulate metabolism. The popularity of HGH treatment has grown substantially since 1985, when the FDA approved Protropin, the first prescription injection treatment for growth hormone deficiency.

Some prescription HGH products include:

  • Genotropin
  • Humatrope
  • Norditropin
  • Nutropin, Nutropin AQ
  • Omnitrope
  • Saizen
  • Tev-Tropin

What is the problem?

HGH is not FDA-approved to for bodybuilding, athletic performance enhancement, or anti-aging. However, it is widely used for these purposes. Global sales topped $3.5 billion in 2011 and are estimated to hit $4.7 billion in 2018.

The link between HGH and shorter life expectancy prompted the FDA to issue a Safety Communication in 2010. French researchers found that patients on HGH were 30% more likely to die early than the general population. However, after reviewing the study, the FDA found that evidence was inconclusive.

HGH and Cancer

HGH is known to boost levels of insulin-growth factor-1 (IGF-1), which studies in animals have associated with cancer and shorter lifespans. A few studies in humans have also found evidence of a possible cancer risk:

Trans-D Tropin Warning Letter

In April 2013, the FDA issued a Warning Letter to the manufacturer of Trans-D Tropin, a topically-administered product that was specifically marketed to increase growth hormone, in violation of federal law.

Beware Counterfeit Imported HGH

The FDA has also issued precautions about a recent “large increase” in imported HGH products, which may be counterfeit:

“The cost of approved HGH products is high, averaging several hundred dollars per dose. Because of this high cost, HGH drugs have been counterfeited and unapproved HGH products are offered for sale to U.S. consumers. … If the drug is bought from foreign sources or over the Internet, safeguards built into the U.S. drug distribution system may be bypassed, placing consumers who use HGH at higher risk.”

HGH and Colon Cancer

In 2002, The Lancet published one of the first studies linking HGH and colon cancer. Researchers evaluated data on nearly 2,000 people in the U.K. who used HGH between 1959-1985. They found significantly higher overall mortality from cancer, and also an 8-fold increased incidence of colon cancer. In 2008, the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology published a case-report of a man who died of highly-aggressive colon cancer after he used HGH for seven years as an “anti-aging” treatment.
