January 18, 2019 — After over 250 reports of car fires, Hyundai and Kia have announced recalls covering approximately 4 million vehicles due to a fire hazard.
Most of the recall is just a software update that will warn drivers that their engine is about to fail, but approximately 168,000 of the vehicles will also need to have their engines inspected.
In 2015, Hyundai and Kia recalled 1.7 million vehicles because the engines could wear out and fail prematurely. The same problem could also cause the engine to catch on fire. Dealers fixed the problem by replacing the engine block, which was expensive and difficult.
Kia and Hyundai are now admitting that the replaced engine blocks may allow fuel to leak and hit hot engine parts, which could cause a fire. Both companies are now recalling the following vehicles:
- 2011 through 2014 Kia Optima cars
- 2012 through 2014 Sorento SUVs
- 2011 through 2013 Sportage SUVs
- 2011 to 2014 Hyundai Sonata cars
- 2013 and 2014 Santa Fe Sport SUVs
On January 16, Hyundai recalled approximately 100,000 of the 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata and the 2013-2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport vehicles.
The recall only covers vehicles with engines that were replaced under previous recalls in 2015., according to Hyundai:
“The recall is being conducted to inspect and confirm proper reinstallation of the fuel tube to the high-pressure fuel pump.”
Around 4 million vehicles are being recalled to get a software update called a “Knock Sensor Detection System” that will continuously monitor the vehicle for signs just before an engine failure.
