Janumet Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Janumet Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Merck & Co. sells the anti-diabetes drug Janumet, which contains sitagliptin and metformin. Unfortunately, the sitagliptin in Janumet has been linked to more than a dozen cases of pancreatic cancer. It is unknown if Janumet causes pancreatic cancer, but until long-term studies are complete, it is a good idea to be aware of Janumet pancreatic cancer symptoms, such as jaundice, unintentional weight-loss, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and more. If you were injured, you may be able to seek compensation by filing a Janumet lawsuit.

Janumet and Pancreatic Cancer

The link between Janumet (sitagliptin / metformin) and pancreatic cancer is still under investigation. Janumet is a relatively new drug, only on the market since 2007, and pancreatic cancer is very rare, which makes Janumet pancreatic cancer hard to study.

One study, published in 2011 in Gastroenterology, identified 16 cases of Janumet pancreatic cancer in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) database of adverse event reports. The reports do not prove that Janumet caused pancreatic cancer, but because this cancer is so rare, they do indicate a potential risk. In 2009, the FDA asked Amylin Pharmaceuticals, the drug-maker behind sitagliptin, to conduct studies to investigate this risk.

Janumet Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Due to the potential risk, it is a good idea to be aware of Janumet pancreatic cancer symptoms. Even if they aren’t signs of pancreatic cancer, they could indicate another serious illness. Unfortunately, pancreatic cancer has a very high mortality rate because it rarely produces symptoms in the early stages. Early diagnosis typically only occurs when the tumor grows in certain locations and blocks ducts.

Janumet pancreatic cancer symptoms could include:

  • Abdominal pain: May be sharp or dull, radiate to the back, get worse after eating, drinking, or when the patient lays down.
  • Jaundice: This symptom of a blocked bile duct causes yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
  • Unintentional weight loss: This may occur due to chronic indigestion or lack of appetite.
  • Diabetes: This may occur suddenly if the pancreas stops producing insulin due to a tumor.
  • Abdominal swelling and/or tenderness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or indigestion
  • Dehydration or malnutrition
  • Urine is dark-colored, stools are pale or clay-colored
  • Itching
  • Generally feeling unwell, weak, or tired (malaise)
