Why are Complications So Serious?

The complications of pancreatic cancer are highly likely to be severe, life-threatening, or deadly. According to the American Cancer Society, by the time pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, more than 80% of cases have metastasized (spread to other organs or tissues), and fewer than 5% of individuals will survive more than 5 years.

What is the Problem?

  • Pancreatic cancer complications and symptoms rarely appear before the cancer has spread.
  • 95% of people who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer have a highly-aggressive type of pancreatic cancer called adenocarcinoma of the pancreas.
  • By the time pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, only 20% of people can have surgery to remove the tumor.
  • The pancreas is located next to several vital organs, which makes it easy for he cancer to spread (metastasize).

List of Complications

  • Abdominal pain: This complication can grow very severe as the cancer grows and compresses nerves in the abdomen. Abdominal pain can be controlled with medications, and severe cases may be treated with surgery to disable the nerves.
  • Jaundice: This complication can occur if the tumor compresses the bile duct, which normally carries bile from the liver into the intestines to help digest food. If bile builds up, a yellow substance called bilirubin can increase in the bloodstream and cause the skin and the whites of the eyes to turn yellow (jaundice)
  • Bowel obstruction: The pancreas is located behind the stomach and above the intestines. If a tumor grows very large, it can compress the upper intestine and cause an obstruction.
  • Diabetes: This is a metabolic condition that involves chronic high blood-sugar levels. Normally, the pancreas produces insulin, which lowers blood-sugar levels. Diabetes can occur if the pancreas stops producing insulin.
  • Weight loss and Malnutrition: These complications can occur as a side effect of cancer treatments (nausea and vomiting), or as a complication of a damaged pancreas. Normally, the pancreas produces digestive enzymes that break down food into nutrients. Without these enzymes, complications may include indigestion, lack of appetite, and nutritional deficiencies.
  • Infections: If the pancreas is severely damaged or there is necrosis (tissue death), bacterial infections and sepsis (blood infection) can occur.
  • Metastasis: This serious complication occurs when the cancer spreads to other parts of the body — usually the lymph nodes and liver.
  • Death: If you are concerned that your loved one’s death was caused by Januvia, contact our lawyers regarding a potential lawsuit.
