Produce Suspected Cause of Texas Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Produce Suspected Cause of Texas Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

August 19, 2013 — Health officials in Texas have confirmed additional cases of Cyclospora food poisoning over the weekend, bringing the total to 267 cases in the state. Nationwide, about 600 people have fallen ill in 20 states. Only the states of Nebraska and Iowa have confirmed the source of cases in their state; although Texas officials believe contaminated produce is to blame, they have yet to confirm a source.

News 92FMreports that Melanie Manville of Fort Bend County Health and Humans Services stated: “That is just where it is most commonly linked back to, is produce.”

She reported that 59 cases of cyclospora food poisoning have been confirmed in Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, Walker, and Victoria County. Clusters of cases have been found primarily in Tarrant and Dallas County.

The first Texas Cyclospora lawsuits have also been filed. The first lawsuit was filed by a woman who fell ill after eating salad at an Olive Garden in Addison, Texas. Another lawsuit was filed on behalf of a mother and son from Midlothian, Texas, who were sickened after eating at an Olive Garden in Lincoln, Nebraska. The lawsuits have been filed against Orlando-based Darden Restaurants, which owns Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and other chain restaurants.

On August 2, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that salad produced by Taylor Farms de Mexico and sold at Olive Garden was associated with the Cyclospora outbreak. Darden has denied selling the contaminated produce at restaurants in Texas.
