Hand Sanitizer Recalled for Methanol Poisoning Risk

In June 2020, UVT Inc. recalled Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer because it may contain methanol (wood alcohol).

Saniderm Hand Sanitizer Recall

UVT recalled 38,830 liters of Saniderm® Advanced Hand Sanitizer (70% Alcohol Content) with Lot Number 0530 and Expiration Date 04/2022. Saniderm was sold nationwide in the United States.

What is the Problem?

Saniderm is labeled as having “Ethyl Alcohol” as the active ingredient, but it may contain methanol (wood alcohol). Methanol can cause severe health problems if it is absorbed through the skin or swallowed:

Methanol Poisoning Health Risks

  • Death
  • Blindness
  • Permanent brain damage
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Permanent vision loss
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Permanent damage to the nervous system

Who Is At Risk?

Anyone who uses Saniderm Hand Sanitizer is at risk of methanol poisoning, but the greatest risk of death and blindness is for young children who accidentally drink it, or teenagers and adults who intentionally drink it as a substitute for ethanol (alcohol) to get drunk.
