January 9, 2015 — Pro Performance has recalled about 52,000 of the SKLZ Recoil 360 All-Position Resistance Trainers because the exercise bands can snap and severely injure a user.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) describes the products as leash-like devices that are intended to be used by partners or by one person with the band securely attached to a stationary object.
The person who is exercising wears a belt, which is attached to an 8-foot resistance cord. The partner holds a safety handle at the end of the cord while the user runs, jumps, or shuffles.
Unfortunately, the CPSC warns that a defective weld poses a serious safety hazard:
“A weld on a ring on the resistance trainer’s belt can break during use and cause the resistance trainer’s flexible cord to quickly and unexpectedly retract and hit an exercise partner who is holding the other end.”
The manufacturer, Pro Performance, has received three reports of the weld on the resistance band breaking. They have also received reports of severe injuries, including blunt trauma to a lower leg, a puncture wound, and a laceration.
Only products marked with “SKLZ” followed by an arrow are subject to recall. Products with the arrow before “SKLZ” are not being recalled. The recalled products were sold between January 2013 and December 2014 for about $40 online and at retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Academy LTD. The manufacturer is offering customers a free replacement.
This is not the first time the CPSC has recalled resistance bands because they can snap and injure people. In 2011, the Target Embark Resistance Band was recalled because it was causing severe injuries (click here for a case report – WARNING: graphic images).
