FDA Warns Stem Cell Company for Unapproved Treatments

May 2019 — In a sign of increasing safety concerns about stem cells being advertised as miracle “cure-alls,” the FDA has put R3 Stem Cell on notice for marketing stem cell products for unapproved diseases like ALS, kidney failure, type-1 and type-2 diabetes, Lyme disease, Parkinson’s disease, strokes, and more.

What is the Risk?

Patients who receive stem cell injections can suffer devastating side effects, such as:

  • Bacterial contamination
  • Infections
  • Sepsis
  • Worsening diabetes
  • Worsening kidney failure
  • Cancer
  • Blindness
  • Permanent disability
  • Death
  • And more

Dangerous Stem Cell Clinics Spread Across U.S.

Stem cell treatments pose serious safety risks and there is little evidence that they work for the diseases they are advertised to treat or cure. In 2017, there were over 700 clinics throughout the U.S. operated by R3 Stem Cell and other companies.

Taking Advantage of Dying Sick Patients

Companies take advantage of sick patients who are desperate for a cure, willing to pay anything, believe lies, or take any risk. Patients pay at least $5,000 out-of-pocket for injections of amniotic stem cells into their joints or spine, or upwards of $10,000 for IV stem cell infusions.

Other Problems With Stem Cell Treatments

Unfortunately, stem cell treatments are frequently advertised for diseases without FDA approval. Poor manufacturing can lead to deadly bacterial contamination, drug mix-ups, bad ingredients, and blood products from donors with transmissible diseases.

12 People Infected in Stem Cell Outbreak

Between August and September 2018, at least 12 patients were hospitalized with bacterial infections after receiving contaminated ReGen® stem cell shots at clinics in Texas, Florida, and Arizona. Tests on unopened vials were positive for E. coli and other bacteria.

R3 Stem Cell CEO is Deadly Doctor

David Greene, CEO of R3 Stem Cell, is a former orthopedic surgeon who lost his license to practice medicine in 2009 after surgeries he botched resulted in several deaths and permanent injuries, according to the ProPublica-New Yorker investigation. After going back to school to get his MBA, Greene began selling “regenerative stem cell therapies” made from placentas or umbilical cords, advertising stem cells for a wide range of diseases.

Stem Cell Blindness Lawsuits Filed in Florida

In 2017, several lawsuits were filed against U.S. Stem Cell after at least 4 patients went permanently blind after receiving stem cell injections in their eyes. One patient, Jeannine Mallard, went blind “practically overnight” and recently learned that her right eye will have to be removed. She said, “They ruined my life.”

Justice Department Files Lawsuit Against Stem Cell Companies

In May 2018, the U.S. Department of Justice filed two lawsuits against stem cell companies in Florida and California, including:

  • US Stem Cell Clinic LLC, of Sunrise, Florida, US Stem Cell, Inc., and company officers Kristin Comella and Theodore Gradel
  • California Stem Cell Treatment Center Inc., of Rancho Mirage and Beverly Hills, California
  • Cell Surgical Network Corporation, and company owners Elliot Lander, M.D. and Mark Berman, M.D.
