12 People Hospitalized from Stem Cell Shot Infections

In December 2018, the CDC reported that 12 people were hospitalized with bacterial infections after receiving injections of stem cell shots.

Bacterial Infection Outbreak

At least 12 people suffered bacterial infections from umbilical cord blood stem cell shots, including Texas (7), Florida (4), and Arizona (1), mostly between August and September 2018. Most of the patients were treated at private clinics that specialize in pain or orthopedics.

Shots Test Positive for Dangerous Bacteria

Tests on unopened vials of the stem cell shots were positive for the same types of microbes that infected the people, including E. coli and several types of fecal bacteria.

FDA Warning Letter Genetech Stem Cell Company

The stem cell shots were made from umbilical cord blood that was contaminated with E. coli and other fecal bacteria. The shots were supplied by Genetech, Inc., of San Diego, California, according to a warning from the FDA. The products listed in the warning letter include:

  • ReGen®5
  • ReGen®10
  • ReGen®30

Stem Cell Shot Recall

In October 2018, Liveyon LLC announced a recall for ReGen® stem cell shots manufactured by Genetech, Inc. after adverse reactions were reported.

What is the Problem?

Stem cell shots are widely advertised as a “cure-all” for pain, arthritis, eye disorders, Parkinson disease, and many other diseases, but the shots pose serious safety risks, and there is little evidence they work.

Investigators discovered a number of violations that could lead to bacterial contamination, such as:

  • Marketing stem cell products without FDA approval
  • Poor manufacturing that may have led to bacterial contamination
  • Problems with donor eligibility
  • Lack of environmental controls
  • Lack of control over ingredients
  • Lack of a system to prevent contamination and mix-ups
