What is the Problem?

Surgical mesh products that were originally designed and intended for hernia repairs are now being commonly used “off-label” in breast surgeries. The FDA has made it clear in several safety warnings that NO mesh products are FDA-approved for any type of breast surgery.

Even so, doctors are widely using mesh products like Strattice® in breast surgeries like the “Internal Bra,” telling patients that the use of mesh will help support their artificial implants or weakened tissues.

What is Strattice?

Strattice™ Reconstructive Tissue Matrix (RTM) is a non-absorbable surgical mesh product that was developed by LifeCell Corporation, a company that is part of AbbVie.

What is Strattice Approved For?

Strattice was approved by the FDA in June 2007 through the 510(k) fast-track approval process. It was “intended for use as a soft tissue patch to reinforce soft tissue where weakness exists, and for the surgical repair of damaged or ruptured soft tissue membranes.”

What Type of Mesh is Strattice?

Strattice is a permanent, non-dissolvable biologic mesh patch that is made from pig skin. The skin is processed to remove all of the original cells, leaving behind a scaffold that mostly consists of collagen and elastin. This type of mesh is called an Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM).

FDA Warning for Breast Mesh Surgery Complications

The FDA has not issued a specific warning for Strattice, but in March 2021 the FDA did issue a warning about higher complication rates for ADM mesh in breast surgery:

“The analysis showed significantly higher complication rates of explantation (implant removal), reoperation and infection.”

Injuries From Internal Bra Surgery With Breast Mesh

Internal bra mesh is linked to a long list of complications. Some of the most severe injuries include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Mesh moves out of position (migration)
  • Mesh detachment
  • Breast reconstruction failure
  • Infection
  • Abscess formation
  • Reconstruction failure
  • Corrective surgery to remove the mesh
  • Needing more surgeries to reconstruct the breast
  • Breast disfigurement
  • And more

Surgical Mesh & Breast Mesh Lawsuits

Tens of thousands of lawsuits have already been filed by people who were injured by surgical mesh products, such as vaginal mesh and hernia mesh.

Despite a massive number of angry patients and severe or even life-threatening injuries, manufacturers have continued to advertise surgical mesh for unproven “off-label” breast surgeries like the internal bra, breast reconstruction, augmentation, and breast lifts.

Safety Concerns for Breast Cancer Survivors

There are also long-term safety concerns with breast mesh, especially for breast cancer survivors who are receiving breast mesh as part of their post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.

Breast mesh is designed to promote inflammation and scar-tissue growth, which is concerning for women who are at risk of cancer recurrence. The mesh can also potentially interfere with mammograms or CT scans, which are an essential part of routine check-ups for women who had breast cancer.
