Stryker Hip Implant Lawsuits
The number of Stryker hip implant lawsuits is growing rapidly — Less than 6 months after Stryker recalled the ABG II and Rejuvenate, 50 lawsuits were filed in New Jersey Superior Court. These lawsuits have been centralized in a Multi-County Litigation (MCL) in Bergen County for pre-trial coordination. It is likely that many additional lawsuits will be filed in this litigation.
If you were injured by a defective hip implant, you are not alone — thousands of people have already filed lawsuits. The DePuy ASR litigation alone contains more than 10,000 lawsuits, and thousands of other lawsuits have been filed against other manufacturers.
Defective medical device litigation in the United States is often centralized in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), because there are often many cases with similar legal questions and injuries. An MDL is not a class action lawsuit. However, a class action lawsuit could be transferred into the MDL. Individual lawsuits that are transferred into an MDL also remain independent (unlike a class action). If you file a lawsuit, your lawyer will advocate on your behalf.
What is the problem with Stryker Hip Replacements?
In the last few years, Stryker Orthopedics has recalled a number of hip implants, including:
- Stryker Rejuvenate (recalled in July 2012)
- Stryker ABG II (recalled in July 2012)
- Stryker Trident (recalled in January 2008)
- And more
The Rejuvenate and ABG II are modular-neck hip implants. They are designed with a metal femoral stem (which is driven into the femur) and an adjustable metal “neck.” Other types of hip implants are designed with one solid piece of metal. The problem with the modular-neck design is that the metal-on-metal component can corrode and release toxic particles of chromium and cobalt into a patient’s body.
Hip Replacement Side Effects

- Loosening of the hip joint
- Decreased walking ability
- Strange sounds in the hip joint

- Allergic reaction
- Elevated metal ions in the bloodstream
- Revision surgery
