November 20, 2014 — A study published in Journal of Clinical Pathology suggests that abdominal pain and enteropathy may be side effects of Benicar, but not other blood-pressure drugs in the same class.
A team from Columbia University looked at 40 patients who suffered from abdominal pain and also reported taking a blood pressure drug in the angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). Twenty patients were using olmesartan (Benicar, Azor, Tribenzor). Twenty patients were using other ARBs.
The researchers found that 10 out of 20 patients on olmesartan had at least one symptom of enteropathy, compared to just 4 out of 20 patients on other ARBs. For the non-olmesartan group, the rate of enteropathy was similar to patients on a placebo, which suggests the other ARBs do not raise a patient’s risk of enteropathy.
Symptoms of enteropathy include chronic, watery diarrhea. Without treatment, it can lead to life-threatening weight-loss, dehydration, malnutrition, kidney failure, and permanent intestinal damage.
The researchers concluded that the data “raises the possibility that there is a spectrum of historical changes associated with olmesartan use.”
The first study to link Benicar and sprue-like enteropathy was published in 2012, when 23 cases were reported by doctors at the Mayo Clinic. Since then, dozens more cases have been described. Last year, the FDA issued a Safety Communication and warned that symptoms might not appear for months or years after a patient started Benicar.
