April 20, 2020 — Avet Pharmaceuticals recalled 8 lots of tetracycline antibiotics that were sold under the Heritage® brand-name because they may fail to treat an infection.
The recall was issued after tests showed that the recalled tetracycline pills failed to dissolve properly.
Low dissolution rates may result in less of the medication getting into a patient’s body, resulting in failure to treat an infection.
In scenarios where the recalled tetracycline is being used to treat a severe infection like pneumonia, the patient could develop a rapidly-worsening infection and suffer death, according to the recall notice.
The recall involves 8 lots of tetracycline HCl capsules USP in 100-count bottles of 250-mg and 500-mg dosages.
The medication was distributed nationwide under the Heritage Pharmaceuticals Inc. label from August 2019 to March 2020.
Tetracycline is an antibiotic that is prescribed for the treatment of lung infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, infections caused by Rickettsiae, and in severe acne.
