August 21, 2013 — This morning, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) case count indicated that 598 people have been sickened in an outbreak of food poisoning linked to the Cyclospora parasite. South Dakota and Wyoming each reported one case, bringing the total number of states to 22.
Texas is the state with the highest number of cases. Although the CDC is reporting 250 cases in the state, the Texas Department of Public Health has reported 269 cases since August 20. Adding the additional cases to the CDC numbers would increase the national total to 617 cases. It is unclear why the CDC is under-reporting cases in Texas.
The CDC has not yet recalled any products or named a source in the outbreak. However, health officials in Nebraska and Iowa have linked 80% of cases in their state to the same pre-packaged salad mixture, which was sold in the food-service industry at restaurants including Olive Garden and Red Lobster. The salad product was imported to the U.S. by Taylor Farms de Mexico.
A growing number of people are seeking compensation for their injury by filing a lawsuit. One of the most recent Texas Cyclospora lawsuits was filed by Kennon and Lyndsay Smith, who were allegedly infected with Cyclospora after eating at Bob’s Taco Station in Rosenberg, Texas. The couple claims the Mexican restaurant served salad from Taylor Farms and Max Luna Produce.
