August 6, 2013 — Health officials at the Texas Department of State Health Services have reported 181 cases of Cyclospora food poisoning in the state. Nationwide, the outbreak has been linked to more than 466 cases of food poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Cyclospora infections have been reported in the following Texas counties:
Brazoria, Cass, Collin, Coryell, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Guadalupe, Harris, Henderson, Hidalgo, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Montague, Nueces, Parker, Potter, Smith, Tarrant, Tom Green, Travis, Van Zandt, Victoria, Walker, Wichita, Williamson, Wise.
Texas officials have not named the source of the outbreak. However, Iowa and Nebraska health departments have named pre-packaged bagged salad mixes from Taylor Farms de Mexico as the likely source of the outbreak. The bagged salad mixes may have been distributed to restaurants like Olive Garden and Red Lobster, which are owned by Orlando-based Darden Restaurants.
The first Cyclospora food poisoning lawsuit was filed last week by a woman from Dallas who fell ill after eating at an Olive Garden in Addison. Since then, several more lawsuits have been filed — all by women who ate at Olive Garden. One lawsuit named an Olive Garden in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Two additional lawsuits named an Olive Garden in Sioux City, Iowa.
