Tribenzor Diarrhea Information

Tribenzor Diarrhea Information

Tribenzor contains olmesartan, a prescription drug that has been linked to chronic diarrhea and sprue-like enteropathy. Because symptoms of this disease resemble Celiac disease (gluten intolerance), some patients were misdiagnosed for years and developed severe health problems.

Tribenzor and Diarrhea

Tribenzor is a prescription medication for the treatment of high blood pressure. It contains a combination of two drugs that reduce blood pressure, olmesartan and amlopidine. It also contains a diuretic (“water pill”) to help patients eliminate excess fluid and prevent swelling in the limbs.

The problem is that olmesartan has been linked to sprue-like enteropathy, a gastrointestinal disease that causes chronic diarrhea. Patients who develop diarrhea often suffer from dozens of watery bowel movements per day.

Although most patients recover after switching to another blood pressure medication, some patients suffered from diarrhea for years before their doctor realized olmesartan was to blame. Over time, chronic diarrhea causes problems with malnutrition and dehydration. It can also permanently damage the intestines and destroy a person’s health.

Prescribing Information

The Prescribing Information for Tribenzor was updated to include chronic diarrhea in July 2013, soon after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found “clear evidence” linking olmesartan with 23 cases of sprue-like enteropathy.

The FDA warned patients to contact a doctor right away if they experience severe diarrhea, diarrhea that does not go away, or significant weight-loss.

FDA recommendation for doctors:

“Tell your patients to contact you if they develop severe, chronic diarrhea with substantial weight loss while taking an olmesartan-containing product, even if it takes months to years for symptoms to develop.”

Signs & Symptoms

The symptoms of diarrhea typically do not occur until a patient has been on Tribenzor for a few months or years. When symptoms do appear, they may include:

  • Frequent, watery bowel movements
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dehydration
  • Malnutrition
  • Fatigue
  • And more
