Fresh Fruit Recalled from Wegmans & Other Stores for Listeria Risk
In March 2022, Fresh Fruit Up Inc. recalled a variety of fresh-cut fruit bowls and a veggie platter due to a risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
What Products Were Recalled?
The recalled involves certain pre-cut watermelon, pineapple, cantaloupe, honeydew, mixed fruit bowls, and veggie platter products that sold under the following brands:
- Wegmans
- Fresh Harvest
- Lexington Co-Op
- Tops
- Fresh Fruit Up
Were Any Illnesses Reported?
The recalled fruit and vegetable products were produced at a facility in New York, and distributed to stores in New York and surrounding states. No illnesses were reported, but a surface in the facility where fruit was packaged into containers tested positive for Listeria, according to the recall notice.
What is Listeria?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can survive on food in the refrigerator and cause food poisoning. In some cases, the infections spreads beyond the digestive system to other parts of the body. This may result in life-threatening complications like meningitis, sepsis (bloodstream infections) or pregnancy complications.
