Robert Shapiro Resigns — Woodbridge Group Files for Bankruptcy

The Woodbridge Group of Companies LLC is a luxury real-estate developer run by CEO Robert Shapiro. In 2017, Woodbridge Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to restructure $750 million in debt.

Robert Shapiro resigned as CEO, only to take on a “consulting” role with a monthly salary of $175,000. His company took in $1 billion in investments. Now, thousands of individual investors are now at risk of losing hundreds of millions of dollars as part of the bankruptcy.

SEC Investigates $1 Billion Investment Fraud

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has been investigating the Woodbridge Group since 2016 — and Robert Shapiro is accused of orchestrating a major fraud on investors. According to the SEC investigation:

“Woodbridge has represented to investors that bona-fide third parties are borrowing money and repaying interest at a high rate, of which the investors in Woodbridge funds get a portion thereof. … However, evidence obtained in our investigation reveals that many, if not all, of these LLCs may be Woodbridge affiliates with Shapiro as their manager.”

What is the problem?

The Schmidt Firm, PLLC is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but our attorneys are not filing a class action lawsuit for victims. Instead, we are filing individual claims in the bankruptcy proceedings against Robert Shapiro and the Woodbridge Group of Companies LLC on behalf of investors.

About Class Action Lawsuits

Class action lawsuits are typically filed by one individual on behalf of a much larger group of people who have similar legal claims. If compensation is awarded, everyone in the class action lawsuit shares the payout equally.

Why Our Lawyers are Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Class Action

Class action lawsuits can have disadvantages when individual investors have far more substantial financial losses than the average plaintiff. Members of a class action might have to accept a “low-ball” settlement or higher attorneys’ fees.

Instead of a class action, our lawyers are filing individual claims in the bankruptcy proceedings against Robert Shapiro and the Woodbridge Group of Companies LLC. We are helping individual investors seek reimbursement for their financial losses.
