What is Acanthamoeba Keratitis?

Acanthamoeba Keratitis is an infection of the cornea caused by a minuscule water-borne ameba. It affects otherwise healthy people and can result in permanent vision loss. Acanthamoeba Keratitis is becoming more prevalent amongst people who wear contact lenses, especially soft lenses. Contact lens wearers make up 85% of those suffering from Acanthamoeba Keratitis. The CDC estimates that those who use Complete MoisturePlus are seven times more likely to develop Acanthamoeba Keratitis than those using other solutions. The CDC and the FDA are investigating 138 confirmed cases of Acanthamoeba Keratitis.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options

Acanthamoeba Keratitis is often misdiagnosed and confused for other bacteria or viruses such as herpes simplex keratits. The infection is usually diagnosed by an eye specialist based on symptoms, growth of the ameba from a corneal scraping, and/or seeing the ameba by a process called confocal microscopy. Early diagnosis by a qualified medical professional is essential for effective treatment of Acanthamoeba Keratitis.

Several prescription eye medications are available for treatment. Treatment with PHMB or chlorhexidine is often combined with a diamidine, either propamidine (Brolene) or hexamidine (Desmodine). However, the infection can sometimes be difficult to treat and the best treatment regimen for each patient should be determined by an eye doctor.
