What is Amp Energy?

Amp Energy (or simply Amp) is an energy drink made by PepsiCo. It was introduced in 2001 as an extension of the Mountain Dew brand. It comes in a variety of sizes and formulas, but the original 16-oz product contained 143-mg of caffeine. Other ingredients include taurine, B-vitamins, guarana, and ginseng.

What is the problem?

As the popularity of energy drinks has grown, so have concerns about the toxic effects of caffeine overdoses. The standard size of Amp contains about half as much caffeine as a 16-oz cup of drip coffee. However, the largest 24-oz cans of Amp contain hundreds of milligrams of caffeine. Drinking just a few of these highly-caffeinated beverages could cause health problems.

Health Risks of Caffeine Overdoses

Caffeine is a stimulant that is toxic in high doses. Although healthy adults can generally consume up to 400-mg per day with only moderate side effects, studies suggest that pregnant women should limit themselves to 200-mg and children to 50-85 mg depending on size, according to Consumer Reports.

Overdosing on caffeine can cause deadly cardiovascular events, psychiatric disorders, and physical side effects. Some of these health risks include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • High blood pressure
  • Increased heart rate
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Death

Health Warnings Issued by FDA

Energy drinks were associated with over 150 injuries and 18 deaths by the time the FDA issued a Safety Alert in November 2012. Two years later, over 30 deaths had been associated with energy drinks, according to a report by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).

The FDA did not conclude that energy drinks caused any of the deaths. However, drink-makers have settled several lawsuits filed on behalf of young adults who experienced deadly cardiovascular events after consuming energy drinks.

According to the FDA, energy drinks can worsen underlying or undiagnosed heart problems:

“It is important for consumers to realize that, while stimulants such as caffeine may make one feel more alert and awake, judgment and reaction time can still be impaired by insufficient rest or sleep. If you are thinking about taking one of these products, please consult your healthcare provider to ensure that you don’t have an underlying or undiagnosed medical condition that could worsen as a result of using them.”
