Blue Bell Recalls All Ice Cream After Listeria Outbreak

Blue Bell Recalls All Ice Cream After Listeria Outbreak

April 21, 2015 — All ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet, and frozen snacks produced by Blue Bell have been recalled after more products tested positive for Listeria.

The recall was expanded after Listeria was detected in two half-gallon containers of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream produced on March 17 and 27, 2015. Blue Bell has now had several positive tests for Listeria in different places and plants.

The original recall was issued about a month ago for single-serving products produced at a facility in Oklahoma. That recall was expanded to include more than 25 products produced at that facility.

The current recall now includes ice cream produced at the company’s flagship location in Brenham, Texas, as well as other facilities. In February, health officials from South Carolina traced Listeria-contaminated ice cream to the facility in Texas, but recalls have not been issued until now.

At least eight hospitalized patients have been diagnosed with Listeria, including five patients in Kansas and three in Texas over the last four years. Three of the patients in Kansas died, and it is possible that listeriosis contributed to their deaths.

Blue Bell has implemented a “test and hold” procedure, which means products will not be released to the market until tests show they are safe. The facility in Oklahoma will remain closed while Blue Bell investigates the source of the problem.

Paul Kruse, Blue Bell CEO and president, told the New York Times:

“We are heartbroken over this situation and apologize to all of our loyal fans and customers. Our entire history has been dedicated to making the very best and highest quality ice cream we could, and we are committed to fixing the problem.”
